Bingdao pu’erh is prized for its distinctive rock-sugar yun and pronounced wilderness character. The flavour is vivid and expansive, while the liquor is smooth, thick, and elegant. Its huigan is exceptionally long, with a lingering sweetness that coats the throat and edges of the tongue.
Bingdao (冰島) is an ancient village in Lincang, originally known by its tribal name Bien Dao, meaning “village with the bamboo gate.” The name was later sinicised as Bingdao, with bing (冰) meaning “ice” and dao (島) meaning “island.” The village lies midway up Bangma Snow Mountain, which rises to 3,200 m, placing Bingdao at approximately 1,600 m above sea level. Bingdao pu’erh is produced from large-leaf (dayeh) trees, many of which grow between 4 and 30 metres in height.
